Title: Poisonous
Author: Allison Brennan
Series: Max Revere, book 3
Copyright: Hardback 2016
Source: Library
published description:
Teen-aged Internet bully Ivy Lake fell off a cliff and few people
cared ... except her mentally-challenged eighteen-year-old step-brother,
Tommy. He loved her in spite of her cruelty. He's distraught and
doesn't understand why his blended family is falling apart. After a
year, the police still have no answers: Ivy could have jumped, could
have been pushed, or it could have been an accident. With too many
suspects and not enough evidence, the investigation has grown cold.
Tommy
thinks that if someone can figure out what happened to his step-sister,
everything will go back to normal, so he writes to investigative
reporter Maxine Revere. This isn’t the type of case Max normally takes
on, but the heartbreak and simple honesty in Tommy's letter pulls her
in. She travels to Corte Madera, California, with her assistant David
Kane and is at first pleased that the police are cooperative. But the
more Max learns about Tommy and his dysfunctional family, the more she
thinks she’s taken on an impossible task: this may be the one case she
can’t solve.
If Ivy was murdered, it was exceptionally
well-planned and that kind of killer could be hiding in plain sight ...
planning the next act of violence. Max believes the truth is always
better than lies, that the truth is the only thing that matters to gain
justice for victims and their families. But for the first time, she
wonders if this time, the truth will kill.
Good suspense, interesting characters, liking this series a lot.

Compulsion
Title: Compulsion
Author: Allison Brennan
Series: Max Revere, book 2
Copyright: Hardback 2015
Source: Library
published description:
Investigative reporter Maxine Revere has a theory: that the five New York City murders for which Adam Bachman is being tried are just part of his killing spree. In probing the disappearance of a retired couple who vanished the prior summer, Max uncovers striking similarities to Bachman's MO and develops a theory that Bachman wasn't working alone.
Max wins a coveted pre-trial interview with the killer, whose disarming composure in the face of her questions is combined with uncomfortable knowledge of Max's own past. She leaves the room convinced, but unable to prove, that Bachman knows exactly what happened to the missing couple. The D.A. wants nothing to jeopardize his case against Bachman and refuses to consider Max's theory. With no physical evidence, Max has to rely on her own wits and investigative prowess to dig deep into Bachman's past. The picture that Max puts together is far darker and more deadly than she ever imagined.
As Max gets closer to the truth, she doesn't realize that she's walking down a road that has been paved just for her. That every step she takes brings her one step closer to a brilliant, methodical sociopath who has been waiting for her to make just one small mistake.
And when she does, he'll be there waiting.
Max Revere returns in another gripping, pulse-pounding thriller from New York Times bestseller Allison Brennan.
Like Max and her supporting characters - good mystery, good thrill to really lock you in.

Thin Ice
Title: Thin Ice
Author: Irene Hannon
Series: Men of Valor, book 2
Copyright: Paperback 2016
Source: Library
published description: After losing her parents in a car accident and her sister to a house fire, Christy Reed has been mired in grief. Life is finally starting to feel normal again when an envelope arrives in the mail--addressed in her sister's handwriting. And the note inside claims she is still alive.
FBI Special Agent Lance McGregor, a former Delta Force operator, is assigned to reopen the case, but he's coming up with more questions than answers. If Ginny Reed is still alive--who is the woman buried in her grave? Where is Ginny? And is Christy a pawn in a twisted cat-and-mouse game--or the target of a sinister plot? As he digs deeper, one thing becomes clear: whoever is behind the bizarre ruse has a deadly agenda.
Bestselling author and two-time Christy Award finalist Irene Hannon warms readers' hearts as they root for a romance between Lance and Christy, but she pulls out all the stops as this high-stakes thriller chills to the bone in a race to the finish.
Was mostly good - some suspense but, not too difficult to figure out the bad guy. Some good stuff with the McGregor family on the side.

Copyright: Paperback, 2015

published description: Two people are abducted, imprisoned, and left with a gun. As hunger and thirst set in, only one walks away alive.
It’s a game more twisted than any Detective Helen Grace has ever seen. If she hadn’t spoken with the shattered survivors herself, she almost wouldn’t believe them.
Helen is familiar with the dark sides of human nature, including her own, but this case—with its seemingly random victims—has her baffled. But as more people go missing, nothing will be more terrifying than when it all starts making sense....
Twisted and turned all over the place. Good stuff.

Black Ice
Title: Black Ice
Author: Becca Fitzpatrick
Copyright: Ebook, 2014
Source: Library
published description: Danger is hard to resist in this sexy thriller from Becca Fitzpatrick, the New York Times bestselling author of the Hush, Hush saga.
Britt Pheiffer has trained to backpack the Teton Range, but she isn’t prepared when her ex-boyfriend, who still haunts her every thought, wants to join her. Before Britt can explore her feelings for Calvin, an unexpected blizzard forces her to seek shelter in a remote cabin, accepting the hospitality of its two very handsome occupants—but these men are fugitives, and they take her hostage.
Britt is forced to guide the men off the mountain, and knows she must stay alive long enough for Calvin to find her. The task is made even more complicated when Britt finds chilling evidence of a series of murders that have taken place there…and in uncovering this, she may become the killer’s next target.
But nothing is as it seems, and everyone is keeping secrets, including Mason, one of her kidnappers. His kindness is confusing Britt. Is he an enemy? Or an ally?
It was a good read - only problem was that I figured out part of the mystery so I kept getting frustrated when the main character didn't see it too. Also, the wrap up at the end was a little too superficial.

A Cold Dark Place
Title: A Cold Dark Place
Author: Toni Anderson
Series: Cold Justice, book 1
Copyright: 2014 ebook
Source: Amazon
published description: Justice isn’t always black or white. Sometimes it’s cold and dark.
Former CIA assassin Alex Parker works for The Gateway Project, a clandestine government organization hell-bent on taking out serial killers and pedophiles before they enter the justice system. Alex doesn’t enjoy killing, but he’s damn good at it. He’s good at dodging the law, too—until a beautiful rookie agent has him wondering what it might be like to get caught.
FBI Special Agent Mallory Rooney has spent years hunting the lowlife who abducted her identical twin sister eighteen years ago. Now, during an on-going serial killer investigation, Mallory begins to suspect there’s a vigilante operating outside the law. She has no choice but to take him down, because murder isn’t justice. Is it?
When Mallory starts asking questions, The Gateway Project management starts to sweat, and orders Alex to watch her. As soon as they meet, the two begin to fall in love. But the lies and betrayals that define Alex’s life threaten to destroy them both—especially when the man who stole her sister all those years ago makes Mallory his next target, and Alex must reveal his true identity to save the woman he loves.
Freebie. Have really liked this author in the past so was excited when came up on a freebie list. Enjoyed her again. Good suspense, likable characters, and some hotness.

The Devil's Workshop
Title: The Devil's Workshop
Author: Alex Grecian
Copyright: Hardback, 2014
Series: Scotland Yard's Murder Squad, book 3
Source: Library
published description: London, 1890. A small group of the city’s elite, fed up with the murder rate, have made it their business to capture violent criminals and mete out their own terrible brand of retribution. Now they are taking it a step further: They have arranged for four murderers to escape from prison, and into the group’s hands.
But the plan goes wrong. The killers elude them, and now it is up to Walter Day, Nevil Hammersmith, and the rest of Scotland Yard’s Murder Squad to hunt the convicts down before they can resume their bloody spree. But the Murder Squad may already be too late. The killers have retribution in mind, and one of them is heading straight toward a member of the Murder Squad, and his family.
And that isn’t even the worst of it. During the escape, one of the killers has stumbled upon the location of another notorious murderer, one thought gone for good, but who is now prepared to join forces with them.
And Saucy Jack has learned some new tricks while he’s been away.
Took a little work to get in to this one and even after I did I still skimmed some. Lots of reviews said how this was the best in the series so, maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for this at the time. I'll keep going with the series though - like the time period, like the characters, like the mystery.

Buried Secrets
Title: Buried Secrets
Author: Irene Hannon
Series: Men of Valor, book 1
Copyright: Paperback 2015
Source: Library
published description: After seven years as a Chicago homicide detective, Lisa Grant has hit a wall. Ready for a kinder, gentler life, she takes a job as a small-town police chief. But the discovery of a human skeleton by a construction crew at the edge of town taxes the resources of her department. A call for assistance brings detective Mac McGregor, an ex-Navy SEAL, to her doorstep. As they work to solve the mystery behind the unmarked grave, danger begins to shadow them. Someone doesn't want this dead person telling any tales--and will stop at nothing to make certain a life-shattering secret stays buried.
Saw it on the 'new releases' shelf - sounded interesting, picked it up. Wasn't bad, characters were likeable, mystery was pretty good for most of it (a little predictable), gives you obvious openers for characters that will star in next books in the series but, not necessarily in a bad way. I don't think I will go searching for them but, if I come across more on the shelf I'll probably pick it up.

A Vision of Fire
Title: A Vision of Fire: A Novel
Author: Gillian Anderson, Jeff Rovin
Copyright: 2014 Hardback
Series: The Earthend Saga, book 1
Source: Library
published description: Renowned child psychologist Caitlin O’Hara is a single mom trying to juggle her job, her son, and a lackluster dating life. Her world is suddenly upturned when Maanik, the daughter of India’s ambassador to the United Nations, starts speaking in tongues and having violent visions. Caitlin is sure that her fits have something to do with the recent assassination attempt on her father—a shooting that has escalated nuclear tensions between India and Pakistan to dangerous levels—but when teenagers around the world start having similar outbursts, Caitlin begins to think that there’s a more sinister force at work.
In Haiti, a student claws at her throat, drowning on dry land. In Iran, a boy suddenly and inexplicably sets himself on fire. Animals, too, are acting irrationally, from rats in New York City to birds in South America to ordinary house pets. With Asia on the cusp of nuclear war, Caitlin must race across the globe to uncover the mystical links among these seemingly unrelated incidents in order to save her patient—and perhaps the world.
I picked this up in the library, frankly because it had Gillian Anderson's name on it - love her. Took me the first bit (prologue and maybe chapters 1 & 2) to get in to it so, a bit of a slow start for me but then, it was really good! Real world conflict, incredibly interesting characters, and some crazy psychological / new agey / past life / spiritual stuff happening. Look forward to more.
