Title: Grace to the Finish
Author: Julie Hyzy
Copyright: 2017, Paperback
Series: Manor House Mysteries, Book 8
Source: Library
published description: Now that Grace Wheaton has officially been named heir to Bennett
Marshfield’s fortune, her usually busy schedule has become a juggling
act. In addition to her duties at Marshfield Manor, she’s bankrolling
her roommates’ refurbished wine shop, Amethyst Cellars. Grace is excited
to check out the rustic space with Bruce and Scott. But that excitement
turns to dismay when they stumble upon the body of the banker involved
with the sale.
Grace wants to get to the bottom of this mystery
quickly so that her friends’ new venture isn’t overshadowed by an
unsolved murder, but she’s got even more to balance when her troubled
sister, Liza, is released from prison early. Liza’s first stop is
Marshfield Manor and her first priority is grabbing a bite of Bennett’s
fortune for herself. Grace has to keep her greedy sister at bay and
catch a killer before her new life comes crashing down around her.
Liked this one - some halfway decent suspense, some good friend time, frustrating family drama. Not bad.

Only Skein Deep
Title: Only Skein Deep
Author: Maggie Sefton
Series: Knitting Mysteries - Book 15
Copyright: 2017 Hardback
Source: Library
published description: Kelly Flynn and her boyfriend, Steve, couldn’t be happier as they await the birth of their bouncing baby boy. Kelly’s got a built-in group of fiber arts specialists, the Lambspun Knitters, who are working away on blankets and booties. As they sit around the table crafting their keepsakes, the story of Giselle Callahan is a popular topic of conversation.
Giselle is the young wife of Henry Callahan, a Fort Connor banking scion, who traded in his previous wife of forty years for a newer model. Giselle’s prowess as a skilled country club golfer and social climber puts her on someone’s hit list. When she is found dead on the greens at the golf club, Kelly and her Lambspun crew worry that a vicious killer is in their midst. They must work fast to bring an unhinged murderer to justice on the back nine before Kelly’s very special delivery…
It was ok. Thinking (& kind of hoping) this is the last of the series, doesn't seem to be a lot of thought put in to the stories anymore. Was nice to see happy ending for Kelly & Steve with the baby though.

Hex on the Beach
Title: Hex on the Beach
Author: Gina LaManna
Series: The Magic & Mixology Mystery Series, book 1
Copyright: 2016 ebook
Source: Amazon
published description: Lily Locke has never believed in witches and wizards, ghosts and magic, shifters and vampires—especially cute blonde vamps with blood-intolerance issues. A rising star at a hotshot marketing agency in Minneapolis, Minnesota, all Lily knows is that she’s a PowerPoint guru, an Excel ninja, and a coffee-maker extraordinaire. Not to mention she’s next in line for a huge promotion.
All that changes when Lily’s assistant delivers a strange quiz to her, one titled A Magical Assessment for Normal Folks. With it comes the promise of a land she's never known existed. A land where Lily not only discovers her biological family for the first time, but a place where she can make a difference, change lives, and step into the role she’s destined to fulfill.
But first, Lily must admit she’s a witch. Then, she has to acknowledge that the tall, dark, and mysterious man who offers his help is strictly focused on business...at least, for now. When a body turns up dead and the next target is Lily, she must trust her powers and accept the help of her newfound friends. Otherwise, she'll never survive the trials of the magical island tucked far, far away in the frigid waters of Lake Superior.
Welcome to The Isle.
Saw a review of this that said it was a cross between Harry Potter & Stephanie Plum - I guess I see that idea but, a bit of a stretch. It was entertaining and I'll keep a lookout for more of the series but, wasn't a big wow.

Dead Cold Brew
Title: Dead Cold Brew
Author: Cleo Coyle
Copyright: 2017, Hardback
Series: Coffeehouse Mysteries, Book 16
Source: Library
published description: Coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi sheds tears of joy when her NYPD detective boyfriend surprises her with an engagement ring. But her bridal bliss is put on hold when a chilling mystery brings a wave of deadly danger to those she holds dear...
After everything Clare and Mike have been through, they deserve a little bit of happily ever after. So when Mike decides to put a ring on Clare's finger, Clare's eccentric octogenarian employer is there to help. She donates the perfect coffee-colored diamonds to include in the setting and the name of a world-famous jeweler who happens to be an old family friend. But while the engagement is steeped in perfection, the celebration is not long lived.
First, a grim-faced attorney interrupts their party with a mysterious letter bequeathing a strange, hidden treasure to Clare's daughter. Next, the renowned jeweler who designed Clare's ring is found poisoned in his shop. Both events appear to be connected to a cold case murder involving a sunken ship, an Italian curse, a suspiciously charming jewel thief, and a shocking family secret. With deadly trouble brewing, Clare must track down clues in some of New York's most secret places before an old vendetta starts producing fresh corpses.
This one was fun...back in New York and got to see everybody... Clare, Mike, Madame, Matt, Tucker, etc. There was a little repetition but, some fun different parts of the city and having the pretty much full cast of characters back was cool.

Notorious
Title: Notorious
Author: Allison Brennan
Series: Max Revere, book 1
Copyright: Paperback 2014
Source: Library
published description: Maxine Revere has dedicated her life to investigating murders that the police have long since given up any hope of solving. A nationally renowned, tough-as-nails investigative reporter with her own TV show, Max tackles cold cases from across the country and every walk of life. But the one unsolved murder that still haunts her is a case from her own past.
When she was a high school senior, a close friend was strangled and another, Kevin, was accused of the crime. Max stood by Kevin―until she found out he lied about his alibi. Though his guilt was never proven, their relationship crumbled from the strain of too many secrets. But that was years ago…and now Max is home for Kevin's funeral. Did he kill himself after years of drug abuse―or did someone else do the deed? As Max uncovers some dark secrets about Kevin's past she finds herself caught in a complicated web of lies that hit far too close to home. And it's becoming increasingly clear that someone will do whatever it takes to make sure the truth stays buried…
Took just a little bit to get in to but, once I did, was hard to put down. Two mysteries that end up all tangled together, family drama, great characters... will look for the next in the series.

Turbo Twenty-Three
Title: Turbo Twenty-Three
Author: Janet Evanovich
Copyright: 2015, Hardback
Series: Stephanie Plum, Book 23
Source: Library
published description: Larry Virgil skipped out on his latest court date after he was arrested for hijacking an eighteen-wheeler full of premium bourbon. Fortunately for bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, Larry is just stupid enough to attempt almost the exact same crime again. Only this time he flees the scene, leaving behind a freezer truck loaded with Bogart ice cream and a dead body—frozen solid and covered in chocolate and chopped pecans.
As fate would have it, Stephanie’s mentor and occasional employer, Ranger, needs her to go undercover at the Bogart factory to find out who’s putting their employees on ice and sabotaging the business. It’s going to be hard for Stephanie to keep her hands off all that ice cream, and even harder for her to keep her hands off Ranger. It’s also going to be hard to explain to Trenton’s hottest cop, Joe Morelli, why she is spending late nights with Ranger, late nights with Lula and Randy Briggs—who are naked and afraid—and late nights keeping tabs on Grandma Mazur and her new fella. Stephanie Plum has a lot on her plate, but for a girl who claims to have “virtually no marketable skills,” these are the kinds of sweet assignments she does best.
Fun one - crazy stuff with Lula and Randy Briggs was silly fun; love the back & forth with Morelli & Ranger.

Better Late Than Never
Title: Better Late Than Never
Author: Jenn McKinlay
Copyright: 2016, Hardback
Series: Library Lover's Mystery, Book 7
Source: Library
published description:
When the Briar Creek Public Library holds its first overdue book amnesty day—no fines for late returns—the volume of incoming materials is more than Lindsey and her staff can handle. In a bind, Lindsey drafts the crafternoon ladies to help check in and sort the stacks of books.
But one tardy tome catches her attention—a copy of J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, twenty years past due. When Lindsey looks up the borrower, she’s shocked to discover it was a murdered teacher named Candice Whitley, whose killer was never found.
Candice checked out the novel on the day she was murdered. Now Lindsey wonders if it could provide a clue to the decades-old cold case. No one noticed who brought the book back in, but could it be Candice’s killer? Lindsey is determined to catch the culprit one way or another, because justice for Candice Whitley is long overdue...
Fun series... it took a while to figure some of the stuff out with this one, which was cool. Really nice to see things work out with Sully in this one.

All the Little Liars
Title: All the Little Liars
Author: Charlaine Harris
Series: Aurora Teagarden Mysteries
Copyright: 2016 Hardback
Source: Library
published description:
Aurora Teagarden is basking in the news of her pregnancy when disaster strikes her small Georgia town: four kids vanish from the school soccer field in an afternoon. Aurora’s 15-year-old brother Phillip is one of them. Also gone are two of his friends, and an 11-year-old girl who was just hoping to get a ride home from soccer practice. And then there’s an even worse discovery―at the kids’ last known destination, a dead body.
While the local police and sheriff’s department comb the county for the missing kids and interview everyone even remotely involved, Aurora and her new husband, true crime writer Robin Crusoe, begin their own investigation. Could the death and kidnappings have anything to do with a group of bullies at the middle school? Is Phillip’s disappearance related to Aurora’s father’s gambling debts? Or is Phillip himself, new to town and an unknown quantity, responsible for taking the other children? But regardless of the reason, as the days go by, the most important questions remain. Are the kids still alive? Who could be concealing them? Where could they be?
With Christmas approaching, Aurora is determined to find her brother…if he’s still alive.
Was pretty fun visiting some of the characters again and it was pretty good. I found the details a little lacking though - would have like more background on the hows and whys and stuff.

Crowned and Dangerous
Title: Crowned and Dangerous
Author: Rhys Bowen
Copyright: 2016, Hardback
Series: Her Royal Spyness Series, Book 10
Source: Library
published description: With Darcy driving me out of London in a borrowed motor car, I soon discover that he isn’t planning to introduce me to the pleasures of sinning in secret—as I had hoped—but to make me his wife!
Of course, there are some quibbles to be dealt with, such as my needing special permission from the King to marry a Roman Catholic and the question of where we might live after the honeymoon. Though he will inherit a title, Darcy is as broke as I am. Even his family’s Irish castle has been sold to a rich American who now employes Darcy’s father as a hired hand.
Throwing these cares to the wind, nothing could deter us from our mission—except perhaps the news that my future father-in-law has just been arrested. It seems the rich American was murdered and Darcy’s father had more than enough motive to do the deed. With the elopement postponed, we head for Ireland where he insists he’s innocent, and it’s up to us to prove it—for better or worse.
Like this series a lot - Georgie is great. Got to see more of her and Darcy in this one, which was great!

One of the elderly residents has been found dead under suspicious circumstances, and Frances, seen arguing with the man earlier that day, is now a person of interest. It’s up to Grace to clear her assistant’s name and find the real killer—before another Indwell resident checks out early...

The Cracked Spine
Title: The Cracked Spine
Author: Paige Shelton
Series: Scottish Bookshop Mysteries, book 1
Copyright: 2016 Hardback
Source: Library
published description: Never an adventurer, no one was more surprised than Delaney Nichols when she packed her bags and moved halfway across the world to Edinburgh, Scotland to start a job at The Cracked Spine, a bookshop located in the heart of the city. Her new boss, Edwin MacAlister, has given her the opportunity of a lifetime, albeit a cryptic one, and Delaney can’t wait to take her spot behind the desk.
The Cracked Spine is filled with everything a book lover could want, each item as eclectic as the people who work there; the spirited and lovable Rosie, who always has tiny dog Hector in tow; Hamlet, a nineteen-year-old thespian with a colored past and bright future; and Edwin, who is just as enigmatic and mysterious as Delaney expected. An extra bonus is Tom the bartender from across the street, with his cobalt eyes, and a gentle brogue―and it doesn’t hurt that he looks awfully good in a kilt.
But before she can settle into her new life, a precious artifact goes missing, and Edwin’s sister is brutally murdered. Never did Delaney think that searching for things lost could mean a killer, but if she’s to keep her job, and protect her new friends, she’ll need to learn the truth behind this Scottish tragedy.
Love the setting, love the scenery, want to be the main character. Mystery was a little slow but, development of all the cast of characters was nice. Will look out for the next one.

Author: Eva Gates
Series: Lighthouse Library Mysteries
Copyright: 2015 Paperback
Source: Library
published description:
For ten years Lucy has enjoyed her job poring over rare tomes of literature for the Harvard Library, but she has not enjoyed the demands of her family’s social whorl or her sort-of-engagement to the staid son of her father’s law partner. But when her ten-year relationship implodes, Lucy realizes that the plot of her life is in need of a serious rewrite.
Calling on her aunt Ellen, Lucy hopes that a little fun in the Outer Banks sun—and some confections from her cousin Josie’s bakery—will help clear her head. But her retreat quickly turns into an unexpected opportunity when Aunt Ellen gets her involved in the lighthouse library tucked away on Bodie Island.
Lucy is thrilled to land a librarian job in her favorite place in the world. But when a priceless first edition Jane Austen novel is stolen and the chair of the library board is murdered, Lucy suddenly finds herself ensnared in a real-life mystery—and she’s not so sure there’s going to be a happy ending....
Was fun - the location is very cool and I totally want her job and apartment.

Whiskey Rebellion
Title: Whiskey Rebellion
Author: Liliana Hart
Series: Addison Holmes Mysteries, book 1
Copyright: 2013 ebook
Source: Amazon
published description: My name is Addison Holmes, and I teach history at James Madison High School in Whiskey Bayou, Georgia. You might be under the assumption that my life went to the dogs when my fiancé left me at the altar for the home economics teacher, or when I got notice that my apartment building was going to be condemned, or even when I was desperate enough to strip to my unmentionables to earn some extra cash. The truth is that I'm pretty much used to disasters following me around on a daily basis, but I could have gone without finding my principal dead in the parking lot of a seedy gentlemen's club.
After the initial shock of finding my first dead body, which included throwing back shots of Jack Daniels like it was water, I decided to take stock of my life. I was in a desperate situation and if the school board ever found out I'd been a stripper, even a bad stripper, I'd be jobless as well as fiancé-less and homeless. Fortunately, I had a friend who felt sorry enough for me to give me a job doing some surveillance work at her detective agency. Not to mention the fact that I was now able to stick my nose into other people's business for a good cause, find a murderer, and pick up helpful tips from an incredibly attractive detective.
A freebie I've had sitting in my library for a while and just got around to it - lots of fun. Reminded me a bit of Janet Evanovich / Stephanie Plum novels - some decent mystery, great sense of humor, some flirting thrown in. Main character is totally likeable. Look forward to more.

Murder in Morningside Heights
Title: Murder in Morningside Heights
Author: Victoria Thompson
Series: Gaslight Mystery
Copyright: 2016 Hardback
Source: Library
published description: After spending his first few weeks as a private detective by investigating infidelities of the wealthy, Frank has a more serious case at hand.
Abigail Northrup of Tarrytown, New York, was her parents’ pride and joy. After graduating from a prestigious women’s college in Morningside Heights, she took a job there as an instructor. She also joined the ranks of the New Women, ladies planning for a life without a husband in which they make their own decisions and make a difference in the world. Unfortunately, her murder ended all that.
When the police declare the incident a random attack and refuse to investigate further, Abigail’s parents request Frank’s help. Of course, he’ll need Sarah’s assistance as she’s more familiar with the world of academia, and it will be far easier for her to interview the lady professors. Yet difficulties arise as they learn that although Miss Northrup may have been an exemplary student and teacher, she lived in a world of secrets and lies…
Like this series a lot - this one was great - the whole gang pretty much working together to solve the case this time.

Time of Fog and Fire
Title: Time of Fog and Fire
Author: Rhys Bowen
Copyright: 2016, Hardback
Series: Molly Murphy Series, Book 16
Source: Library
published description: Molly Murphy Sullivan's husband Daniel, a police captain in turn-of-the-century New York City, is in a precarious position. The new police commissioner wants him off the force altogether. So when Daniel’s offered an assignment from John Wilkie, head of the secret service, he’s eager to accept. Molly can’t draw any details of the assignment out of him, even where he’ll be working. But when she spots him in San Francisco during a movie news segment, she starts to wonder if he’s in even more danger than she had first believed. And then she receives a strange and cryptic letter from him, leading her to conclude that he wants her to join him in San Francisco. Molly knows that if Daniel’s turning to her rather than John Wilkie or his contacts in the police force, something must have gone terribly wrong. What can she do for him that the police can’t? Especially when she doesn’t even know what his assignment is? Embarking on a cross-country journey with her young son, Molly can’t fathom what’s in store for her, but she knows it might be dangerous―in fact, it might put all of their lives at risk.
Was good. I figured out who was who a little early but, was really nice that Daniel finally showed Molly some recognition and appreciation. Good action.

Devonshire Scream
Title: Devonshire Scream
Author: Laura Childs
Copyright: 2016, Hardback
Series: Tea Shop Mystery, Book 18
Source: Library
published description:
Catering a high-class trunk show at Heart's Desire Jewelry is a shining achievement for Theodosia and the Indigo Tea Shop. After all, a slew of jewelers, museums, and private collectors will be there to showcase their wares and sip some of Theo's best blends. But just as Theo settles in to enjoy the fruits of her labor, the party is crashed by a gang of masked muggers who steal the precious gems and jewels on display. The thieves disappear almost as quickly as they arrived, leaving shattered glass, scattered gemstones, and a dead body in their wake.
Although the last thing Theo wants is to get involved, she can't help but intercede when her dear friend Brooke, aunt of the victim and owner of Heart's Desire, begs for help in figuring out who committed the brutal burglary. Though the FBI believes this daring "smash and grab" is the work of an international gang of jewel thieves, Theo is convinced that the felon is someone much closer to home...
So, I think I've said this for the last several in the series - don't think I'll keep going, kind of disappointing, seems like the same story mostly. Also, getting less of the Hayley character every time and honestly, Theo is a little snooty/arrogant for my tastes, I think. Maybe not arrogant, maybe just a little too know it all or something - I don't know, can't pinpoint it. But, might be for real this time on stopping the series. I think I just keep going back because I really like the setting.

Away in a Manger
Title: Away in a Manger
Author: Rhys Bowen
Copyright: 2015, Hardback
Series: Molly Murphy Series, Book 15
Source: Library
published description: It's Christmastime in 1905 New York City, and for once, Molly Murphy Sullivan is looking forward to the approaching holidays. She has a family of her own now: she and Daniel have a baby son and twelve-year-old Bridie is living with them as their ward. As Molly and the children listen to carolers in the street, they hear a lovely voice, the voice of an angel, and see a beggar girl huddled in a doorway, singing "Away in a Manger." Bridie is touched by the girl's ragged clothes and wants to help her out if they can. They give her a quarter, only to watch a bigger boy take it from her. But Molly discovers the boy is the girl's older brother. They've come from England and their mother has disappeared, and they're living with an aunt who mistreats them terribly.
Molly quickly realizes that these children are not the usual city waifs. They are well-spoken and clearly used to better things. So who are they? And what's happened to their mother? As Molly looks for a way to help the children and for the answers to these questions, she gets drawn into an investigation that will take her up to the highest levels of New York society.
A little bit of mystery but, a little bit predictable. Was still a fun holiday time read.
